Capstan on Land

A capstan on land is a mechanical device used to move or lift heavy loads by wrapping a rope or cable around a rotating drum or vertical cylinder. When a crew turns the capstan’s handle or crank, the drum spins, pulling in the rope and gradually easing the load. This system multiplies human effort, making it easier to lift or transport heavy objects like ships' anchors or large cargo. It’s similar to a giant winch but often used in maritime contexts and large-scale construction projects to achieve controlled, powerful movement of heavy materials.
