Capstan (Nautical term)
A capstan is a vertical, drum-shaped device used on ships to assist in pulling heavy loads, such as raising anchors or hoisting sails. It consists of a cylindrical drum around which rope or cable is wound. Crew members rotate the capstan, often using bars inserted into holes, creating friction that multiplies their pulling power. This mechanical advantage allows sailors to handle substantial weight with less effort, making it easier to move heavy gear or anchor chains safely and efficiently on ships.
