Capstan (nautical)

A capstan is a vertical cylinder used on ships to help lift heavy loads, such as anchors or cables. operated by turning wooden or metal bars called levers or handles inserted into holes around the drum’s perimeter. As the bars are rotated, the capstan winds or unwinds ropes or cables around its drum, providing mechanical advantage through friction and multiple turns. This makes it easier for sailors to exert force on heavy loads without requiring excessive effort. Capstans are essential for handling large, heavy maritime equipment safely and efficiently, especially in situations involving anchoring and mooring operations.
