Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE)

Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE) is a viral infection affecting goats, caused by the Lentivirus. It primarily targets the joints, causing arthritis, and the nervous system, leading to encephalitis, which can result in neurological issues. Many infected goats show no symptoms, but some may develop swelling in joints, difficulty moving, weight loss, and neurological signs like tremors. The virus spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids such as milk, saliva, or nasal secretions. There’s no cure, but management includes regular testing, isolating infected animals, and ensuring proper hygiene to prevent spread within herds.
