Capercaillie
The capercaillie is a large, wild grouse native to European forests, known for its striking appearance and elaborate courtship displays. Males are significantly larger than females and have a distinctive fan-shaped tail, vibrant black and white plumage, and a loud, booming call during the breeding season. They forage mainly on the ground, feeding on leaves, buds, and insects. Capercaillies prefer mature, undisturbed coniferous or mixed forests with dense undergrowth, which provide food and shelter. They are sensitive to habitat loss and disturbance, making them important indicators of forest ecosystem health.
