Capelinhos Volcano

The Capelinhos Volcano is a volcanic eruption site on the island of Faial in the Azores, Portugal. Erupting between 1957 and 1958, it created a new volcanic cone and significantly altered the landscape, adding about two square kilometers of land. The eruption was mainly underwater initially, with lava flowing above the surface later. It caused local evacuations but was not deadly. Today, the site serves as a geological and historical monument, showcasing volcanic activity and offering insights into natural Earth processes. A visitor center helps explain the eruption’s history, making it an important point of interest for understanding volcanic phenomena.
