Capacity and Self-Determination
Capacity refers to an individual's ability to understand information, make informed decisions, and appreciate the consequences of those decisions. Self-determination is the right to control one's own life, including making choices about personal, health, or financial matters. Together, they ensure that people are empowered to make decisions for themselves when they are capable, while recognizing that support or restrictions are appropriate if someone lacks the capacity to do so independently. This balance respects personal autonomy while protecting individuals who may need assistance.
