canal lock

A canal lock is a mechanical system used to raise and lower boats between stretches of water at different levels. It consists of a chamber with gates at both ends. When a boat enters the lock, the gates close and water is either added or drained to match the water level of the next section of the canal. Once the water level stabilizes, the gates at the other end open, allowing the boat to proceed. Locks enable smooth navigation across varying terrains and elevations, ensuring safe and efficient passage along waterways.
