Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission
The Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was established to address the history and impacts of the residential school system, where Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their communities and placed in government-funded churches' schools. Operating from 2008 to 2015, the TRC documented survivors' stories, acknowledged the harm caused, and promoted awareness and healing. Its goal was to foster understanding, support reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and Canadians, and ensure such cultural injustices are never repeated. The commission’s work emphasizes accountability and respect for Indigenous rights and experiences.
