Canadian Indigenous Languages
Canadian Indigenous languages are a diverse group of over 70 languages spoken by Indigenous peoples across Canada, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. They are rich in history, culture, and oral traditions, with languages such as Cree, Ojibwe, Inuktitut, and Mi’kmaq. Many of these languages face challenges due to historical suppression and declining speakers, but efforts are underway to revitalize and preserve them through education, documentation, and community initiatives. Recognizing and supporting Indigenous languages is vital for cultural identity and sovereignty within Canada.
