cAMP response element

The cAMP response element (CRE) is a specific DNA sequence found in the promoters of certain genes. When a cell receives signals, enzymes produce a molecule called cAMP, which activates a protein called CREB. Activated CREB binds to the CRE in the DNA, prompting the gene to be turned on or off. This process helps cells respond to signals like hormones or stress, regulating important functions such as metabolism, growth, and development. Essentially, CRE acts as a switch that helps cells control gene activity in response to internal and external signals.
