CaMK, or calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase, is an enzyme activated by calcium ions and the protein calmodulin. When calcium levels rise inside a cell—such as during nerve signals or muscle activity—CaMK becomes active and helps regulate various processes. This includes modifying proteins involved in memory formation, muscle contraction, and gene expression.
