Camelops
Camelops was an extinct genus of camels that lived in North America during the Pleistocene epoch, roughly 300,000 to 11,000 years ago. They resembled modern camels with long legs, necks, and distinctive humps, adapted to various environments like grasslands and deserts. Camelops was larger than today’s camels, with some species standing over 7 feet tall at the shoulder. They were herbivores, eating mostly grasses and shrubs. Their extinction is believed to be linked to climate change and human activity during the late Pleistocene, making them an important part of North American prehistoric ecology.
