Callorhinchus milii

Callorhinchus milii, commonly known as the Australian elephant fish or Callorhinchus lionfish, is a species of cartilaginous fish related to sharks and rays. It inhabits shallow waters around southern Australia and New Zealand. Recognizable by its distinctive horn-like snout and bony plates covering its body, it uses electroreception to detect prey. It mainly feeds on small invertebrates and fish, and has a slow growth rate with some individuals living over 10 years. Despite its unusual appearance, it plays an important role in its ecosystem and has been studied for insights into vertebrate evolution.
