California's Gun Violence Restraining Orders
California's Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVROs) allow law enforcement, family members, or housemates to petition for a court order to temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others. These orders can be issued quickly and last up to 21 days for ex parte (emergency) requests, or longer after a full court hearing. The goal is to prevent potential gun-related violence by intervening when someone shows warning signs of harm, providing a legal mechanism for safety while respecting due process.
