Calakmul (archaeological site)
Calakmul is an ancient Maya archaeological site located in southeastern Mexico’s jungles, once a powerful city-state during the Classic period (around 250–900 CE). Known for its impressive pyramids, temples, and palaces, it was a major political and economic center, rivaling other great cities like Tikal. Surrounded by a dense rainforest, Calakmul played a key role in Maya civilization, with extensive stone architecture and hieroglyphic inscriptions revealing its history. Today, it is part of a protected biosphere reserve, offering insights into Maya society and history amidst a rich natural environment.
