César Cui was a Russian composer and music critic of Lithuanian descent, born in 1835. He's best known as part of the "Mighty Handful," a group of five Russian composers committed to creating a distinct Russian national style. Cui's music combines Western classical traditions with Russian themes and folk influences, often characterized by clear melodies and expressive harmonies. Besides composing, he was a respected critic and scholar. His works include operas, art songs, and chamber music, contributing significantly to Russian musical identity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
