C/N ratio (Carbon-Nitrogen ratio)

The C/N ratio, or Carbon-to-Nitrogen ratio, measures the balance between carbon and nitrogen in a substance, such as compost or soil. It indicates how much carbon (energy source for microbes) compares to nitrogen (building block for proteins). A proper C/N ratio promotes healthy decomposition and nutrient availability. Too high a ratio (excess carbon) slows decay, while too low (excess nitrogen) can cause odors or nutrient loss. Ideally, a balanced C/N ratio around 25-30:1 supports efficient composting and soil health, ensuring microbes can break down organic material effectively while retaining essential nutrients.
