Burkan al-Sham

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), often called Burkan al-Sham in some contexts, is an Islamist militant group originating from Syria. It emerged around 2017 from earlier rebel factions seeking to establish an Islamic state. HTS operates mainly in northwest Syria, controlling areas like Idlib province, and has been involved in ongoing conflict with the Syrian government and other rebel groups. While it presents itself as a Syrian nationalist and anti-terrorist force, many countries consider it a terrorist organization due to its extremist ideology and attacks. Its influence complicates efforts for peace and stability in the region.
