Burger King v. Rudzewicz
Burger King v. Rudzewicz (1985) is a Supreme Court case about when a court in one state can exercise jurisdiction over someone in another state. Rudzewicz, a Michigan franchisee, was sued in Florida for breaching their franchise agreement. The Court ruled that the Florida court could hear the case because Rudzewicz had enough contacts with Florida—such as entering into a franchise contract and actively conducting business there—that it was fair and reasonable to hold him accountable in Florida. The case established that businesses must have sufficient connections to a state for its courts to have jurisdiction over them.
