Burakumin
Burakumin are a historically marginalized group in Japan, often associated with a caste-like system. Traditionally, they were engaged in occupations considered impure or low-status, such as butchery and leatherworking. Despite legal reforms abolishing discrimination, prejudices persist, leading to social stigma and economic disadvantage. The Burakumin identity is linked to specific communities, and many individuals still face challenges in education, employment, and marriage due to societal biases. Awareness and advocacy for equality have increased, but the legacy of discrimination remains a significant issue in contemporary Japan.
