Bunraku (Japanese Puppet Theatre)
Bunraku is a traditional Japanese puppet theatre art that originated in the 17th century, featuring highly skilled performers manipulating large, intricate puppets that depict historical or mythological stories. The puppeteers, often unseen or partially visible, work in coordinated harmony to bring the characters to life through precise movements and timing. Narration is provided by a chanted storyteller called a tayū, accompanied by live music. Bunraku combines visual artistry, storytelling, and musical performance, creating an immersive experience that emphasizes craftsmanship and emotional depth. It is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and remains an important aspect of Japan’s cultural heritage.
