Bundesversammlung

The Bundesversammlung, or Federal Assembly, is a special German parliamentary body convened solely to elect the President of Germany. It comprises all members of the Bundestag (federal parliament) and an equal number of delegates chosen by state parliaments, often including notable public figures, politicians, and experts. The assembly meets infrequently, typically every five years, in a formal setting to vote on the presidential candidate. Its purpose is to ensure a broad, representative election of the head of state, emphasizing the unity of federal and state interests within Germany’s constitutional framework.
