Buddhas of Bamyan

The Buddhas of Bamyan were two giant ancient statues of Buddha carved into cliffs in Afghanistan's Bamyan Valley, dating back to the 6th century. They symbolized spiritual and cultural significance, blending Gandharan art with local traditions. Standing approximately 55 and 38 meters tall, they were among the largest Buddha statues in the world. Unfortunately, in 2001, the Taliban destroyed them, citing religious reasons. Their destruction was a great cultural loss, but their images remain powerful symbols of Afghanistan’s historical heritage and the enduring importance of preserving cultural landmarks.
