Brutalism (architecture)
Brutalism is an architectural style that emerged in the mid-20th century, characterized by its bold, raw appearance and use of rugged concrete (béton brut). Structures often feature geometric, blocky forms with an emphasis on function over decoration. The style aims to convey honesty in materials and construction, emphasizing strength and simplicity. While some see Brutalism as stark or imposing, it also celebrates a sense of honesty and utilitarian beauty, frequently used in government buildings, universities, and housing projects to evoke resilience and practicality.
