Brokopondo Reservoir

The Brokopondo Reservoir, also known as the Brokopondo Lake, is a large artificial lake in Suriname created in the 1960s by flooding a forested area to generate hydroelectric power from the Suriname River. Covering about 1,560 square kilometers, it supplies electricity for the country and supports local ecosystems. The reservoir also provides water for transportation, fishing, and tourism. While it has helped meet energy needs, its creation led to the displacement of local communities and changes to the natural landscape. Overall, it plays a key role in Suriname’s infrastructure and development efforts.
