Broad gauge railway
A broad gauge railway uses track widths wider than the standard gauge of 4 feet 8.5 inches (1,435 mm). Typically, broad gauges are over 1,435 mm, such as 1,676 mm (Cape gauge) or wider. The increased width provides greater stability and allows for more spacious, comfortable carriages. Broader gauges can support heavier loads and higher speeds, which is advantageous for certain types of rail services. They are often used in regions where these benefits enhance safety, capacity, or efficiency, though they require different track infrastructure compared to standard gauge systems.
