British Women's Auxiliary Air Force
The British Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) was a military branch established during World War II, allowing women to serve in non-combat roles supporting the Royal Air Force. Founded in 1939, the WAAF provided essential services such as radar operation, communications, mechanics, and administrative support. Although not combatants, members played a vital role in operational readiness and contributed significantly to the war effort. The WAAF helped to integrate women into the armed forces formally, paving the way for broader gender roles within the military in the UK. It was disbanded in 1949, with many roles later absorbed into the regular RAF.
