British Shipbuilders (the industry group)
British Shipbuilders was a government-owned industry group established in the 1970s to oversee the UK's naval and merchant shipbuilding industry. Its purpose was to manage and support the decline of shipbuilding companies facing economic challenges, aiming to preserve jobs, maintain strategic naval capabilities, and encourage modernization. The group coordinated efforts among various shipyards, often restructuring or privatizing facilities over time. By the early 1990s, British Shipbuilders was dismantled as the industry moved toward private ownership, marking the end of a state-led approach to Britain’s maritime manufacturing sector.
