British Indian Railway

The British Indian Railway was a railway system established during British rule in India from the mid-19th century to independence in 1947. It was built primarily for economic and administrative purposes, connecting major cities, ports, and regions across the subcontinent. This extensive network facilitated the movement of goods and people, helping to unify India’s diverse landscape. British engineers and workers designed and expanded the railway, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive rail systems in the world at that time. After independence, the existing infrastructure was inherited and became the foundation of India’s modern railway system.
