Breton War of Succession

The Breton War of Succession (1341–1364) was a regional conflict in Brittany, France, sparked by a disputed claim to the duchy’s throne. After Duke John III died without a direct heir, factions supported different candidates—mainly John of Montfort and Charles of Blois—each backed by larger powers like England and France. The conflict was part of the broader Hundred Years’ War. It involved military battles, political alliances, and changing alliances until a peace treaty recognized John of Montfort’s descendants as the rulers of Brittany. The war helped shape Breton independence and its position between France and England.
