Breivik's trial

Anders Behring Breivik was tried in Norway in 2012 after committing a mass attack in 2011, killing 77 people. His trial focused on whether he was legally sane or mentally ill. He admitted to the violence but claimed he acted out of political motives. Psychiatrists evaluated his mental health; some found him sane, others saw signs of severe personality disorder. The court ultimately declared him sane, ruling that he was responsible for his actions. Breivik was then convicted of terrorism and murder and received a 21-year prison sentence, which can be extended as long as he remains a threat.
