Brechtian Criticism

Brechtian criticism analyzes theater and art through the lens of Bertolt Brecht’s ideas, emphasizing its social and political functions. Brecht believed art should provoke critical thinking and social awareness, rather than simply entertain. His technique, called the "Verfremdungseffekt" or alienation effect, aims to remind audiences that they are watching a performance, encouraging them to think critically about social issues rather than getting emotionally absorbed. In criticism, this approach evaluates how a work challenges viewers’ perceptions, prompts reflection on societal problems, and fosters a sense of responsibility for change.
