Brazilian Independence

Brazilian Independence was a process that culminated in 1822 when Brazil declared itself independent from Portugal. After over three centuries of colonization, Brazil sought to establish its sovereignty, driven by economic and political desires for self-governance. Prince Pedro, acting on behalf of the Portuguese crown, declared independence along the Ipiranga River, famously shouting "IndependĂȘncia ou Morte!" (Independence or Death!). This peaceful yet decisive move led to Brazil forming its own nation, eventually becoming an empire under Pedro I. The independence was largely peaceful compared to other Latin American countries' struggles, setting the foundation for Brazil's modern nationhood.
