Brazil's National Program of Biomass Ethanol (Proálcool)
Brazil’s National Program of Biomass Ethanol, known as Proálcool, was launched in the 1970s to reduce reliance on imported oil by developing ethanol fuel from sugarcane. The program promoted the production and use of ethanol-powered vehicles, making Brazil a global leader in biofuels. It aimed to lower fuel costs, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and increase energy independence. Over time, Proálcool helped establish a large-scale ethanol industry, creating economic and environmental benefits, while encouraging sustainable use of Brazil’s abundant sugarcane resources for renewable energy.
