Brazil's Military Government

Brazil's Military Government refers to a period from 1964 to 1985 during which the military took control of the country after a coup that ousted President João Goulart. The military regime justified its rule by claiming it would stabilize the nation and combat leftist movements. During this time, political repression, censorship, and human rights violations were widespread. Economic policies led to growth but also inequality. The regime began to weaken in the late 1970s, leading to a gradual return to democracy, culminating in the election of a civilian president in 1985, marking the end of military rule.
