Brady Law

The Brady Law, enacted in 1993, established federal background check requirements for gun purchases from licensed dealers. It mandates a background check to ensure the buyer isn’t prohibited by law from owning a firearm, such as individuals convicted of certain crimes or with a history of mental illness. The law aims to prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands and promotes safer gun transactions. It also created the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), enabling quick background checks to facilitate legal, timely gun purchases while enhancing public safety.
