Boukman Dutty

Boukman Dutty was a prominent Haitian leader and Afro-Caribbean revolutionary in the late 18th century. He is best known for sparking the Haitian Revolution by leading enslaved Africans against French colonial rule in 1791. Dutty’s activism and fiery spirit inspired enslaved people to fight for their freedom and justice, playing a crucial role in establishing Haiti as the first Black republic and the first nation founded through a successful slave revolt. His efforts symbolized resistance against oppression and contributed significantly to the abolition of slavery in Haiti.
