Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel Project

Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel Project, also known as the Big Dig, was a major infrastructure initiative to reroute the city’s busy downtown highway underground into a tunnel, replacing the elevated highway known as the Central Artery. The goal was to reduce congestion, improve safety, and revitalize the city’s core. Completed in the early 2000s, it included constructing new tunnels, bridges, and streets, significantly transforming Boston’s urban landscape. Despite its technical success, the project faced delays and cost overruns, highlighting challenges in large-scale urban construction.
