Boston Central Artery/Tunnel Project
The Boston Central Artery/Tunnel Project, also known as the Big Dig, was a major infrastructure effort to reroute the city's primary highway, Interstate 93, into a tunnel beneath downtown Boston. This was done to remove the highway from the city center, improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and reclaim surface space for public use. The project involved constructing a complex network of tunnels, bridges, and ramps, ultimately transforming Boston’s urban landscape and improving transportation. Despite delays and high costs, it is considered a significant engineering achievement that modernized Boston’s transportation system.
