Bornean languages
Bornean languages are a diverse group of over 150 languages spoken on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. They belong mainly to the Austronesian language family, with some from other families. These languages vary greatly across regions and communities, reflecting Borneo’s rich cultural diversity. Many are spoken by indigenous groups, while some have become lingua francas or official languages. Despite their differences, Bornean languages often share similar grammar and vocabulary due to their common ancestry, but they are not mutually intelligible, highlighting Borneo’s complex linguistic landscape.
