A bone scan is a diagnostic imaging test that helps detect abnormalities in bones. It involves injecting a small amount of radioactive material into a vein, which travels through the bloodstream and accumulates in areas of increased bone activity, such as fractures, infections, or tumors. After about two to three hours, a special camera called a gamma camera scans the body to capture images of the radioactive material’s distribution. These images highlight areas with abnormal bone activity, allowing doctors to identify issues that may not be visible on standard X-rays, aiding in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
