Bommen Berend was a Dutch military leader and nobleman in the early 17th century, best known for defending the city of Groningen during a siege in 1594. Initially serving as a captain, he was nicknamed "Bommen Berend" (which means "Bombing Berend") because of his use of explosives and aggressive tactics in warfare. His efforts helped preserve the city for the Dutch Republic during Spain's attempt to regain control. His actions made him a local hero, symbolizing resilience and military ingenuity during a turbulent period of Dutch independence struggles.
