Boltzmann's entropy concept describes how disorder or randomness in a system relates to the number of ways its components can be arranged. In essence, entropy measures the system’s degree of complexity or unpredictability. The higher the entropy, the more possible configurations the system can have, indicating greater disorder. Think of it like a deck of cards: a well-shuffled deck has high entropy because there are many arrangements, whereas a sorted deck has low entropy. Boltzmann quantified this idea mathematically, showing that entropy increases as the number of arrangements (or microstates) of a system grows.
