Bolivia Water War
The Bolivia Water War (2000–2001) was a nationwide protest against the privatization of the country’s water supply, primarily in the city of Cochabamba. International corporations, led by Bechtel, took control of the water system and increased prices significantly, making it unaffordable for many residents. Citizens organized mass demonstrations, strikes, and civil disobedience, demanding the government revoke the privatization contract. The protests led to the government canceling the contract, restoring public control over water resources. The movement highlighted issues of social justice, resource sovereignty, and the impacts of neoliberal economic policies in developing countries.
