The Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) is a global effort started in 2002 that promotes free, unrestricted access to scholarly research and academic publications online. It aims to make research articles and data freely available to everyone, enhancing knowledge sharing, collaboration, and innovation. BOAI encourages authors and publishers to share their work openly, removing paywalls and subscription barriers that limit access. By doing so, it supports the idea that publicly funded research should be openly accessible to benefit society, scientists, students, and the public worldwide.
