Blue-green algae
Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, are microscopic organisms found in water bodies like lakes and ponds. They naturally occur in many environments and can perform photosynthesis, similar to plants, producing oxygen. However, when nutrient levels (like nitrogen and phosphorus from runoff) are high, they can multiply rapidly, forming dense mats or blooms that may produce toxins harmful to humans, animals, and aquatic life. These blooms can cause unpleasant odors, discolor water, and pose health risks if ingested or contacted. Managing nutrient pollution and monitoring water quality are essential to prevent and control blue-green algae outbreaks.
