blue asbestos (crocidolite)
Blue asbestos, known as crocidolite, is a type of naturally occurring mineral fiber once used for insulation and fireproofing. It has fine, needle-like fibers that are very durable and resistant to heat. However, when these fibers become airborne and are inhaled, they can cause serious health problems, including lung disease and mesothelioma—a dangerous cancer originating in the lining of the lungs. Due to these health risks, the use of crocidolite has been banned or heavily restricted in many countries. Handling or disturbing materials containing blue asbestos requires proper safety procedures to prevent fiber release.
