Bloodstream infection

A bloodstream infection occurs when harmful bacteria, viruses, or fungi enter and spread through the blood. Since blood travels throughout the entire body, these microbes can quickly reach organs and tissues, causing serious health issues. Symptoms may include fever, chills, weakness, and confusion. It often results from infections somewhere else in the body, such as the urinary tract, lungs, or skin, or from medical procedures like surgeries or IV lines. Prompt treatment with antibiotics or antifungal medications is essential to control the infection and prevent complications, including sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection.
