Blood Stem Cell Transplantation
Blood stem cell transplantation is a medical procedure where healthy stem cells are infused into a patient to replace damaged or diseased blood cells. These stem cells can develop into all types of blood cells, including red cells, white cells, and platelets. The process is often used to treat certain cancers (like leukemia) or blood disorders. It involves harvesting stem cells from a donor or the patient, conditioning the patient with chemotherapy or radiation to prepare for transplant, and then infusing the healthy cells, which travel to the bone marrow and begin producing healthy blood cells.
